AI Overviews have experienced significant fluctuations. Just before their public launch, they were appearing in 80% of queries. However, on the release date, there was a noticeable drop.

Now we see AI Overview are slowly gaining their prevalence. 

We decided to monitor AI Overviews regularly to determine which types of keywords generate them.

Now we would like to share it with you. 

Observation: share of AI Overviews: 11% 

It rose from 8% in mid June to 11% in August:

Variations by Industry

AI Overviews appear differently across industries. For instance, in ecommerce, only 1.3% of queries generate AI Overviews. 

The reason is simple: Google does not show ads in AI Overviews. For Google, the choice is clear—generate revenue or not. We anticipate that once Google finds a way to include ads, the prevalence of AI Overviews in ecommerce will likely increase.

Conversely, in the health industry, Google frequently displays AI Overviews, with around 50% of queries showing them.

Observation: specific search types generate more AI Overviews. 

Certain types of searches are more likely to generate AI Overviews. 

For example: “How much” queries: Over 31% have AI Overviews

“How to” queries: Over 41% have AI Overviews

In contrast, searches containing “near me” do not generate AI Overviews based on our sample data.

Predictions and Preparation

Our prediction is that Google will increase the number of AI Overviews over time. Eventually, they will find a way to monetize content within AI Overviews through ads. This will likely lead to an increase in AI Overviews in niches like ecommerce and beauty.
